Gapped Teeth - Yes or no?!

Gap tooth beauties...
That's right 2010 became the year that having a gap between your two front teeth - or a diastema, which is the proper term, became in vogue, literally - Check it out here. Meaning that for the first time in my life I was ahead of a trend :) Should note that mine is natural and I wasn't one of the crazy few who actually had a gap made due to this trend!
I've been very self-conscious of the gap between my teeth from a very young age...being nicknamed Madonna didn't help matters. In fact, I'm still very much aware of my gap now and very rarely will I show my teeth in photos and so ironically this year I went to my dentist about having my gap closed. I was told that I had 2 options; I could have the gap filled or I could have veneers fitted although I was advised against the later as they're not recommended for healthy teeth. So for £100 a flaw (one of many) which I'm insecure about could be corrected. What was interesting though was that when I enquired about teeth whitening I was told I didn't need it - I do! It made me wonder then why he thought closing the gap seemed necessary? Perhaps I read too much into it, but it didn't help matters lol.
My Gap...
It's been 6 months since I went to see about having it closed and I still haven't taken the plunge. To be honest, as much as I hate I'm scared to lose it. I worry that I'll hate the look of my teeth when it's done; that they will look stupid; and I'm worried about losing something that makes me uniquely me. I have decided though that 2011 will be the year I make a decision once and for all and when I've made my decision that will be the end of it!
So what do you guys think of the gap tooth trend? and most importantly, what would you do if you had one? Embrace it or get rid?

Thanks for your sweet comment ^^
I think you should embrace your gap. I think it suits you really well and makes you look cute :D
I used to have a gap but unfortunately it wasn't a nice straight one like yours. It did mean though that when I got a brace it straightened it up and the gap disappeared. It was years ago but I must admit I do miss it.
So in conclusion I agree with Maria and think you should keep it!
Rapunzel x
Aww thanks girls :)
I often wonder why braces were never suggested when I was younger as it used to be a lot wider so thankfully it has closed a bit! x
Yours looks very nice! I have one too and over the years have debated getting rid of it, but haven't done so yet. I think younger women look cute with gaps but I'm worried it might not look that great on me when I'm over 50! I guess I can look to Lauren Hutton as example as she still has hers and is over 60. :)
It's weird I often look at celebs with gaps and wonder why they haven't had them fixed - Which is wrong, they're human after all. I think it's because they're expected to look perfect (and most do)that when you see a flaw it dooesn't look right.
I'm just praying that I'll still have my own teeth when I'm 50! lol x
hye there lisa. we have the same name (lysa) and the same problem. how awkward is that.. haha.
i was thinking of becoming a part time model here in malaysia but i fear to be rejected bcuz of this gap. but wth... i think we should keep the gap dear. thats what makes us special and noticeable..
What a coincidence Lysa!! I have decided at the moment to keep the gap.
You should go for the modelling, Gap toothed models are the 'in' thing at the moment!
Good luck if you do go for it and thanks for the comment :)
Gapped teeth? If you're happy with it, then yes you should keep those. But if not, then it's okay if you want to them to get fixed. My friend has a gapped tooth before, but because she wants to have a more gorgeous smile, she had it fixed. Now, her smile is more gorgeous than mine. And I envy her because of that!
Brigitte Bardot has not very large space in her teeth . the worse and ugliest gap is for Vanessa Paradis 'it become very large and looks teeth that fallen and her teeth became bent.
@Marcila I envy anyone with nice teeth I'm not a fan of mine at all. It's the first thing I notice about people.
